Conversation Tips for Overcoming Shyness

Imagine this situation: a beautiful woman or a handsome man sits across the bar from you, and she or he is glancing in your direction. You can tell that the other person is interested, but you simply can’t get up the courage to go up to the person and talk to them. Before you know it, someone else has swooped in and started a conversation with the person, and your chance to talk with them has passed.

Does this sound familiar? If you suffer from shyness, you will find that this type of thing occurs on a daily or weekly basis. Striking up a conversation with an attractive stranger can be difficult, and will be even more so thanks to the fact that you are so shy. If you want to become better at conversing with attractive people of the opposite sex, you will find that overcoming your shyness will play a key role in the improvement process.

One of the best conversation tips that any expert will tell you is to smile. A smile is incredibly disarming, and you will find that a genuine smile will set both you and the other person more at ease. A smile actually releases endorphins into your body, and these endorphins help you to feel good. If you want to be successful at chatting up strangers, you will find that a genuine smile is the way to break the ice.

A laugh will always make the conversation easier, so starting out with something funny or witty can be a great way to make progress in a conversation. Don’t try too hard to be witty or funny, as most people can tell when you’re trying too hard. Let the funny flow out of you naturally, and let your natural charm take over.

Body language speaks volumes about who you are, as well as how you feel about yourself.  If you are always looking around you as if you are checking for an escape route, your conversation partner will feel that you are not interested in them. If you hunch over or slouch, it will speak volumes about your lack of self-confidence. In order to effectively converse with people, you will find that standing straight, keeping eye contact, and appearing confident will go a lot further then you would expect.

One great way to feel confident when you are talking with others is to pretend to be confident, both in your mind and in your actions. If you think you are confident, you are harnessing the power of your mind. If you act confident, your physical actions will show that you are confident. By combining the two, you will find that even acting confident can help you to become confident.

Finally, don’t worry about a few rejections or failed attempts. Overcoming shyness doesn’t happen overnight, and you will find that shyness will plague you for years to come. Many of the world’s most famous speakers and politicians started out incredibly shy, and it took them years to overcome their inabilities to communicate. If you can pretend to be confident, you will find that confidence will eventually come.
